The procedure is also known as HAEMODIALYSIS.

Many people suffer from CANCER. What is cancer? If the cells of any part of the body increase or proliferate without any limit,it is a CANCEROUS CONDITION. Cancer can affect any part of the body. It is said that cancer is curable if detected early. When there is any abnormal growth in any part of the body,it is better to get examined to rule out cancer. There are two types of growth.  One is BENIGN.  The other is MALIGNANT. When it is benign, the cancer may not spread to other parts of the body. But in the case of malignant cancer, the cancer is likely to spread anywhere.  A cancer specialist is know as ONCOLOGIST.

HEALTH / MEDICAL VOCABULARY 2

I am continuing my discussion on health and medical words. Health is wealth. It is a popular saying. A sound mind in a sound body . This is another saying.

In the previous post, we dealt with terms relating to HEART. Heart is like a pump. It keeps on pumping out blood to various organs of the body. In fact, it sends impure blood to lungs, receives pure blood from the lungs after purification process and pumps out pure blood to all cells of the body. This goes on till the end of one's life. Heart has four chambers. The upper chambers are known as AURICLES. The lower chambers are known as VENTRICLES. The blood vessels carrying pure blood are ARTERIES. Those carrying impure blood are VEINS.

In certain cases, a need arises for a new heart to a patient . The procedure of giving a new heart to a person is known as HEART TRANSPLANTATION .  The first Heart transplant was carried out by Dr. Christian Barnard in South Africa. The person from whom , a heart has been removed for transplant becomes the DONOR. The patient who receives the heart is the RECIPIENT . Generally, the heart for transplant is removed from a CADAVER immediately after the death of the donor. CADAVER is a dead body. When a person' s brain stops functioning , he is BRAIN DEAD. It is possible for the heart to beat even after BRAIN DEATH. A person is dead when his brain is dead.

Just like heart, the other organs can also be transplanted.  There are donors for eyes, kidney, liver etc.
A person can live with one kidney. So a living person can donate a kidney. Kidney transplant is also known as RENAL TRANSPLANT .  The donor should be compatible with the recepient for any organ donation. To avoid malpractices, there are legislations  relating to organ donation in many countries.

A specialist who deals with kidney diseases is known as NEPHROLOGIST . The science of Kidney disease is NEPHROLOGY. A specialist of urinary problems is known as UROLOGIST . URINARY STONES is a common urinary problem.

A doctor dealing with problems relating to women is a GYNECOLOGIST .
The branch of medicine dealing with women's problems is GYNECOLOGY.

The doctor specializing in child delivery is an OBSTETRICIAN.The branch of medicine is  OBSTETRICS. The act of giving birth to a child is known as DELIVERY. Delivery can be natural/ normal. Otherwise , they resort to CEASARIAN SECTION procedure thereby the child is delivered by a surgical procedure on a woman. A BREACH DELIVERY is one in which the legs of the baby come out first. When a woman has pains before delivery, it is called LABOUR. The ward in which the expecting woman is known as LABOUR WARD in a hospital.

That is all in this post. Those who want more information on terms in BLOC LETTERS , may consult Wikipedia or other good sources.

HEALTH/MEDICAL VOCABULARY 1

HEALTH AND MEDICAL VOCABULARY

Everyday , we read  newspaper . Newspaper , unfortunately, is thrown away after reading the headlines. Earlier I had mentioned in a post that we can use newspapers for improving our English vocabulary. These days newspapers invariably contain articles on health and medicine which are of general interest. Even then , words relating to medicine are frequently used. To understand these articles, you require knowledge of certain medical words. You need not be a qualified doctor to learn these words. In this and subsequent posts, I am going to discuss medical vocabulary expected of an educated person.

You are keeping GOOD HEALTH.  Sometimes , you FALL SICK.  You may have FEVER. You have TEMPERATURE . It means, your body temperature is more than the NORMAL TEMPERATURE . You are RUNNING  TEMPERATURE . You are LAID UP WITH FEVER. You are having COLD. You have SEVERE COUGH and COLD. It is necessary to CONSULT a DOCTOR. Normally , we consult a GENERAL  PHYSICIAN  , in the beginning. He may advise you to get certain TESTS done depending on your problem.  BLOOD TEST is a very common test. It may reveal many things about your ailment. URINE TEST is also very common.

Sometime, the general physician will refer you to a SPECIALIST .  Specialists are doctors who have mastered or specialized a particular branch of medicine. Let us learn a few words indicating the various specialities and the doctors who specialize .

When you have some eye problem, you go to an eye doctor. He is OPHTHALMOLOGIST.
His branch of speciality is OPTHALMOLOGY. He may examine your eyes. You may have problems with your vision . You are not able to read properly. The signboard is not clear.
Perhaps , you are having ACUTE  MYOPIA or SHORT SIGHT. He tests your EYE POWER and advises you to wear suitable GLASSES. When you wear the glasses, your eyesight is CORRECTED . There are several types of eye problems. When people age, they suffer sometimes from EYE CATARACT and a simple OPERATION is performed for REMOVAL OF
CATARACT . A more serious eye problem is GLAUCOMA . When the EYE PRESSURE is high, eye drops are prescribed. To get your eye glasses of suitable specification , you go to an OPTICIAN . When a person does not distinguish different colors, he suffers from COLOR BLINDNESS .

You know that ear, nose and throat are closely connected and doctors specializing in problems relating to these organs / parts are known as ENT specialist. If you have some problem in the ear, surely you would consult an ENT specialist.

When you have some problem with your heart , you are going to consult a CARDIOLOGIST .
His field of specialization is CARDIOLOGY. The doctors use a stethoscope to hear your heart beat. They use SPHYGMOMANOMETER to measure your BLOOD PRESSURE . If your blood pressure is not normal, you may either be suffering from HIGH or LOW BLOOD PRESSURE . High BP is HYPERTENSION . Low BP is HYPOTENSION . An ECG is taken to examine how your heart is functioning . ECG means ELECTROCARDIOGRAM. To find out if you have any block in your heart, they take an Angiogram. To open up a block, a procedure called ANGIOPLASTY is performed. When a person's heart is malfunctioning , he may get HEART ATTACK. Sometimes , a BY-PASS SURGERY  is performed on a heart patient.

I shall continue in my next post. Kindly let me if you find this post useful. Regular visitors to this blog may please subscribe.

ABOUT FAST NOT FAST FOOD

AMAZING VOCABULARY---ABOUT FAST, NOT FAST FOOD

In my last post, I explained how newspapers can be useful in improving our vocabulary. Now I am going to take up something different. Every person has a family. The blood ties unite a person to the members of his/her family. Similarly words have also their family depending upon the criterion which we take to put them in a particular category. To me, it appears that the simplest criterion would be to group them on the basis of their meaning. I hope that it is clear.
Muslims all over the world are observing Ramadan. The most essential thing during this period is the observance of FAST. In this post, we can find out all words and phrases relating to fast. This word has another meaning. Fast bowling, running fast, drive fast etc.We are not concerned with that meaning. Nor are we interested in FAST FOOD. We are interested only in the act in which one does not take any food. Not eating food for a specified period of time for reasons of health or religion is a FAST. Rahim is observing a fast.  Note the usage carefully. We say,” one observes a fast" After the specified period is over, Rahim breaks his fast. What happens when one observes a fast?  Surely he becomes hungry. . The pangs of hunger would  torment him. When one is fasting, he abstains from food. Religious people and people conscious of their health abstain from  alcohol and drugs. Poor people have to face starvation.  When you have nothing to eat, necessarily, you have to starve.  There is famine  in Ethiopia and many people die of starvation.. My hostel management is very stingy and we practically survive on starvation diet..
Young girls obsessed with having a slim figure nearly starve and this condition is known as  anorexia nervosa. There is another condition where people keep on eating. That condition is known as bulimia nervosa. . For health reasons, peoplego on a diet.  My friend weighs 90kg.At present he is on a diet.  His diet regimen is very strict. I would not be able to observe such a regimen . While dieting , one has to be very careful. A body deprived of food develops craving . If you have no will power, you will end up with binge eating.. Many a time, I had indulged in binge eating. Thankfully  it was not binge drinking.  Going on a binge   is a great danger. All our efforts to reduce will be nullified.
Friends, the words/phrases in bold letters  are to be learnt by usual methods.Make these words and phrase a part of your active vocabulary.See you next time Wish you happy learning.
